Mary Zimmerman's Metamorphoses is a play that retells and reimagines Ovid's classic myths, focusing on the theme of transformation. The play features a large pool of water as its central set piece, symbolizing both literal and metaphorical changes. Through a series of interconnected vignettes, the play explores love, loss, grief, and the ever-changing nature of human experience, drawing on stories like Midas and the golden touch, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Eros and Psyche.
